    What type of programs does Black Girls CODE offer?

    Black Girls CODE offers the following programs:
    One day workshops, enrichment activities, summer camps, and code clubs. Each program has a specific subject in five program domains: virtual reality, robotics, game design, web design and mobile app development. Dates and location vary by chapter city.

    Can you provide information on Black Girls CODE Chapter programs?

    In 16 chapter cities in the US and abroad, BGC executes several weekend workshops, hackathons and enrichment events such as WOC STEM panels and culturally relevant speaker sessions. These chapter events take place throughout the year and are led by tech professionals and influencers who guide our girls in learning the essentials of technology from “Build a Webpage in a Day” to “VR Experience”

    Can you provide information on Black Girls CODE Virtual programs?

    BGC offers structured digital engagement via a virtual platform that varies from one-off BGC curriculum technical coding workshops, specialized series of technical workshops where the content is provided by partners or collaborated content between partners and BGC Curriculum Teams, as well as virtual enrichment activities to support soft skills and leadership skills.

    Can you provide information on Black Girls CODE Summer Camp?

    Black Girls CODE Summer Camp sessions offer a space where girls can learn computer science and coding principles in the company of other girls like themselves and with mentorship from women they can see themselves becoming. 

     

    BGC’s virtual day camps provide five to ten days of hands-on, project-based tech instruction. The camp runs for two hours a day with asynchronous and synchronous learning.

     

    BGC’s in-person day camps provide ten to twenty days of hands-on, project-based instruction, where students engage in tech instruction. Camp runs from 9AM- 4PM Monday through Friday with lunch, breaks, wellness, community building, field trips and of course, coding!

    How do I apply to attend a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    How much do Black Girls CODE workshops cost?

    Our workshop costs vary from $35 – $100, depending on workshop. Each cost is listed on the Eventbrite registration page. You may request a scholarship on the registration page. Please note, there are a limited number of scholarships for each event. Watch your email for a status update on your scholarship request. If you are offered a scholarship, there will be instructions included in the email. Parents or community members can reach out to Black Girls CODE for information on how to apply for a scholarship.

    Is there a GPA requirement I have to meet to be accepted into a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    No. There is not a GPA requirement.

    My participant has limited or no technical skills/experience. Do you require a certain level of technical experience to attend a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    No. Black Girls CODE workshops welcome all girls (ages 7-17) of all skill levels. Our workshops provide hands-on experience that are led by supportive technical instructors who can help increase the participant’s abilities.

    Do students need to bring their own laptops to attend workshops?

    Students are provided with computers and other necessary equipment during Black Girls CODE workshops.

    How many chapters does Black Girls CODE have?

    Since 2011, across 15 chapter cities in the US and abroad, BGC has hosted technology focused weekend workshops, hackathons, summer camps, and many other enrichment opportunities for more than 30,000 Black girls; or as we call them, future tech bosses. This year, we plan to launch our 16th chapter in Charlotte, NC. Our current chapters are:

    I don't live in one of the cities where workshops are being offered. How can I get a Black Girls CODE chapter started in my city or region?

    Thank you for your interest in a chapter for (city/state/country). We currently have 15 chapters–soon to be 16. Launching chapters in new regions and markets is determined by organizational capacity and resources. We expand into new chapters based on the organization’s strategic plan. If future expansion may include your city/state/country, we will certainly be in touch. It is always helpful to have willing volunteers and resources in an area.

    I am a parent/guardian. May I attend a Black Girls CODE workshop with my daughter?

    Black Girls CODE workshops are exclusively for girls between the ages of 7 and 17. This is to foster a safe space for girls due to the alarming statistics about girls in technology.

    National Center for Women & Information Technology Statistics:
    Girls make up 27 percent of all Advanced Placement (AP) computer science test takers in secondary schools.

    19% of 2016 Computer and Information Sciences bachelor’s degree recipients were female

    Do students have to be Black to join a workshop?

    Our workshops are open to all girls of any race and ethnicity. Our focus is to create a community that welcomes young women of color, Black and Latina.

    How can my company get involved with Black Girls CODE?

    Black Girls CODE has been a transformative global movement fueled by the influence of our chapters since its inception. Our partners are a critical part of our mission to change the face of technology through programming. Together we engage, educate, and empower young girls of color across the globe to become the builders of technological innovation and their own futures.

    There are three major ways to engage:

    1. SUPPORT BGC through donations–monetary, in-kind, and through brand awareness.
    2. INSPIRE BGC Future Tech Bosses through volunteerism.
    3. EMPOWER BGC Future Tech Bosses through opportunities–mentorship, internships, workshops, enrichments.

    How can I sponsor a girl for a Black Girls CODE workshop?

    Anyone can sponsor a girl. Visit the Program/Events page to click on any of our active events.  You also can send in your donation to our Headquarters. When students apply for a scholarship, they will receive your donation to cover their workshop cost.

    Since 2011, BGC has reached over 20,000 girls. The population increases annually.

    Many of our sponsors support one or more of our National Chapters. Increased sponsors mean we can expand. Certainly, in states where only one Chapter currently exists, we would welcome expansion greatly.     How do Employee Resource Groups support BGC? How do other BGC organizations sponsor or support BGC?

    BGC has a Volunteer Coordinator to explore opportunities for ERGs. Activities can range from providing scholarships to girls from low-income backgrounds; offering workshop space or a visit to an operational unit within the organization with matching speaker; offering internships; problem-solving competitions/fairs and much more. Your involvement can be in one or all domains of activity.

    How does BGC build community with their programming?

    BGC is driven by the support of volunteers within our local city chapters Please visit our volunteer page to learn how BGC has connected with communities nationally and internationally. Several of our chapters also describe connections they make with industry e.g. Memphis Chapter.
